Binaural Beats
People ask about timing in three ways, and they have three different answers. Getting them apart prevents both disappointment ("I tried it once for five minutes and felt nothing") and over-claiming ("it keeps me calm all day").
Below is what each looks like in the actual data, plus reasonable dosing rules you can test on yourself tonight.
The cleanest onset data comes from a heart-rate-variability (HRV) study in 60 healthy adults published in 2024 by researchers at Mahidol University. Participants were measured for 2 minutes before, 10 minutes during, and 2 minutes after listening to 6 Hz theta binaural beats, on three visits spaced two weeks apart.
The parasympathetic markers — RMSSD (root mean square of successive RR-interval differences) and pNN50 (share of adjacent beats differing by more than 50 ms) — rose significantly in the 4-to-10-minute window of listening, and this held on every visit. The authors' conclusion was blunt: "a minimum of four minutes of 6 Hz BB could be beneficial to improve relaxation during listening."
That is a useful floor. If you put headphones on for 90 seconds while walking to a meeting, you are before the window where the physiological shift shows up. Ten minutes is a realistic minimum; twenty is comfortable.

Read that table for what it is: a summary of when effects were measured, not a promise about your nervous system. Individual response varies, and a small share of listeners report little effect at all.
Entrainment does not switch off with the audio. A 2024 paper in Brain Sciences recorded measurable EEG shifts during listening, with residual brainwave changes lasting minutes afterwards and a gradual rather than instant return to baseline. That is a carry-over, not a permanent re-tuning.
Attention research gives a rough magnitude. In a study where participants received 14 Hz beats for 12 minutes before a sustained-attention task, performance was still better than controls during a task with no audio playing — implying a carry-over of about 6 minutes. A companion study with 15 minutes of exposure points the same way. Nobody has published a precise half-life, so treat "several minutes" as the honest range and "5 to 20 minutes" as a useful planning window.
Practical consequence: do the thing you want to do inside the window. If you want calm for a difficult phone call, listen for 15 minutes and dial while the effect is live. If you want calm for two hours of work, one 20-minute session will not hold the whole block — that is what repeated short sessions across the day are for.
This is where the most interesting evidence lives, because it separates "feels nice" from "the brain changed how it processes the signal."

The HRV study adds a second data point in the same direction.
