Delta (0.5–4 Hz): the deep-sleep band

Delta is the slowest and largest brainwave, dominant in the deepest stage of non-REM sleep. A study using a 3 Hz delta binaural beat reported induced delta activity and lengthened stage-three slow-wave sleep — the stage most tied to feeling refreshed. A separate study of soccer players listening to 2–8 Hz beats reported better perceived sleep quality and easier waking. For most people delta is the right band for an overnight loop or the last stretch of a sleep session.

Practical note: because delta beats sit right at the sleep threshold, many people drift off before noticing any "effect." That is exactly the point — the goal is to fall asleep, not to observe the frequency. Keep the volume low and let a fade-out timer do the rest.

Theta (4–8 Hz): meditation and the hypnagogic gap

Theta dominates the transition into sleep, deep meditation, and the hypnagogic state between waking and dreaming where imagery and vivid mental pictures arise. It is the band most associated with meditation practice and with the creative "gap" where loose associations connect. It is the band with the strongest evidence for relaxation and anxiety reduction: the 2019 Garcia-Argibay meta-analysis (22 controlled studies) found a small-to-moderate effect on state anxiety (d ≈ 0.45), comparable to other relaxation techniques. A 10 Hz alpha beat is a sensible default for the wind-down hour before bed, for light reading, or for anyone who finds theta too drowsy. Beta (14–30 Hz): alert concentration

Beta is the active, outward-attention band of normal waking thought, problem-solving, and conversation. Proponents use beta beats (often 14–20 Hz) for study and analytical work. The evidence is weak and mixed: some small studies report attention improvements, others find no effect, and a 2023 trial on gamma found none at all. A practical approach is to treat beta as an experiment: try a short beta session for a specific task and keep it only if it subjectively helps. Because beta is close to your natural waking state, it is also the band least likely to feel like it is "doing something" — which is itself honest feedback.

Gamma (30–100 Hz): the peak-focus debate

Gamma is the fastest band, linked to binding information across brain regions during complex cognition and to 40 Hz activity in Alzheimer's research. A 2017 study (Colzato et al., Psychological Research) found 40 Hz gamma binaural beats narrowed the spotlight of attention on a global-local task, and earlier work linked gamma to improved performance on an attentional-blink task.
