The most useful single data point comes from a 2019 high-density EEG study at the University of Salzburg, which tested binaural beats and isochronic tones at multiple frequencies (6 Hz theta, 10 Hz alpha, 40 Hz gamma) across 72 participants. The headline result:

First, the researchers found that who entrained was strongly predicted by resting EEG — people with higher resting alpha power were more likely to entrain to alpha stimulation of either type. Second, the broader literature is more mixed: a 2023 systematic review (Angwin et al.) found context-dependent results, and a 2020 review noted binaural beats showed effects but with substantial heterogeneity. So the 65% vs 35% figure is meaningful but not the whole story.
This is the single biggest practical dividing line. If you always have headphones (earbuds at the desk, over-ear at work, sleep headphones at night), binaural beats are usually the better everyday choice: proven effect, gentle sound, layers under ambient rain or music.
