Because poor sleep and depression travel together in older adults, improving one plausibly helped the other.
The next study is more sobering. A 2021 RCT in Complementary Therapies in Medicine (Daengruan et al., 2021; 18 adults with mild-to-moderate major depressive disorder) tested music therapy with 10 Hz binaural beats embedded, added to standard care, versus standard care alone. After 8 weeks the PHQ-9 depression score in the beat group was lower by 1.50 points — but the difference was not statistically significant (p = 0.32). The authors did not claim a treatment effect; they called for longer studies. That is the honest ceiling of this particular trial: a trend, not proof.
The third relevant study is newer and more cognitive. A 2025 quasi-experimental study exposed 60 patients with major depressive disorder to 10 Hz alpha binaural beats for 20 minutes a day over four weeks, versus a neutral-sound control.
