Binaural Beats
Creativity is not one muscle. Psychologists split it into at least two: divergent thinking (how many uses can you find for a brick? — fluency and flexibility of ideas) and convergent thinking (what connects these three words? — narrowing to one correct answer). A tool that helps one can leave the other untouched. Any honest claim about "binaural beats for creativity" has to say which one it means. The best study we have does exactly that.
Reedijk, Bolders & Hommel (2013) gave healthy adults binaural beats at alpha or gamma frequency (or a control tone) and had them complete both a divergent-thinking task (the Alternate Uses Task) and a convergent-thinking task (Remote Associates Task), while estimating striatal dopamine via spontaneous eye-blink rate — a validated proxy. The result was precise:
The dopamine finding is the most useful part. It explains why some people swear beats unlock their ideas while others feel foggy: if your baseline arousal/dopamine is already high, adding entrainment can tip you past optimal into scattered. If it is lower, the same beat gives you the gentle loosening that ideation needs. This is why "one frequency for everyone" marketing is wrong.

This is a single lab study with modest effect sizes, and it measured creativity by task scores, not novels or patents. "Cognitive entrainment is not suited for a one-size-fits-all approach," the authors wrote directly. Beats will not make you a genius, and for some they subtract. Used narrowly — alpha priming before brainstorming, for lower-arousal listeners — the evidence supports a small, real nudge.

They can boost divergent thinking (generating ideas) but not convergent thinking (the single right answer). Reedijk, Bolders & Hommel (2013) found the benefit depended on the listener's dopamine level: lower-dopamine people improved under alpha beats, higher-dopamine people were unaffected or impaired. Not a universal switch.
In that study alpha and gamma worked about equally for divergent thinking; the frequency mattered less than the individual's dopamine profile. Alpha (8-12 Hz) is the common, low-risk start for open ideation, with gamma (~40 Hz) an alternative to test.
During the divergent phase — brainstorming, free-writing, ideation — not while converging on one answer (editing, arithmetic, decisions). A 15-30 minute alpha session before or during brainstorming is the evidence-aligned dose.
The 2013 study found beats impaired higher-dopamine listeners on divergent tasks. Creativity is not one function and entrainment is not one-size-fits-all. If a session leaves you scattered or blocked, switch frequency, shorten it, or drop beats for a walk and a context change.
